Quote follow-up for plumbers

Plumbing splits into two worlds — urgent emergencies that close in hours and planned jobs that drift for weeks. Knowing which you're following up, and how, is the whole game.

No trade has a wider spread between fast and slow jobs than plumbing. A burst pipe closes in minutes; a bathroom renovation can take a customer two months to commit to. Follow-up has to flex to match — what works for an emergency callout would be far too aggressive for a planned refit, and vice versa.

Two speeds of plumbing work

Emergency and reactive jobs

Leaks, blockages, no hot water — the customer wants it fixed now and will book whoever answers and can attend soonest. Here, follow-up means near-instant response. If you can't take the call, a reply within minutes often wins the job outright, because speed beats price when water is on the floor.

Planned and project work

New bathrooms, boiler swaps, full re-pipes, kitchen plumbing for a renovation. These are £2,000–£8,000 decisions the customer weighs against other trades and other spending. This is where patient, structured follow-up over weeks pays off.

Don't use one playbook for both

Chasing an emergency lead daily is fine; chasing a bathroom-refit customer daily will lose the job. Match your cadence to the urgency of the work.

Follow-up timing for planned jobs

  1. 1Same day: Send a clear quote with scope, fixtures included, and a realistic timeline.
  2. 2Day 2: Confirm it arrived; offer to walk through what's included versus optional upgrades.
  3. 3Day 5–7: Address the likely sticking point — usually price, disruption, or coordinating with other trades.
  4. 4Week 2–3: A final, low-pressure check-in before the lead goes cold.

Handling plumbing objections

"Another plumber quoted less"

Compete on clarity, not just price. Spell out what's included — parts quality, guarantees, making good, clearing away — so a cheaper quote is revealed as cheaper for a reason.

"We're worried about the mess and disruption"

For bathroom and re-pipe jobs, this is often the real hesitation, not money. Reassure them on how long the water will be off, dust control, and daily clean-up. Certainty closes.

Hi Rachel — following up on the bathroom quote. Just to reassure you: water stays on except for a single day, we sheet everything off, and we tidy up each evening. Would a start date in three weeks work for you?

What closes plumbing jobs

  • Speed on emergencies — be the first to reply, every time.
  • Itemised quotes so customers see why you're not the cheapest.
  • Clear guarantees and Gas Safe / qualification proof to build instant trust.
  • Coordinate proactively with tilers, electricians and builders on renovation jobs.
